You Are What You Eat: The Startling Reality Of Ultra-Processed Food

It’s often said, ‘You are what you eat.’

What are you then if you’re mostly eating ultra-processed food (UPF)?

“UPF is an industrially formulated edible substance derived from natural food or synthesized from other organic compoundS”

Yum yum!

This book has had a profound impact on me like no other.

This book has fundamentally changed the way I think about food and it could do for you too...

Ultra-Processed People (van Tulleken, 2023)

"Ultra-Processed People" by Chris van Tulleken, a practising doctor, explores the detrimental effects of UPFs on human health, linking them to various chronic diseases and obesity. The book highlights how these ‘foods’, heavily manipulated by the industry, undermine our wellbeing and offers insights into making healthier dietary choices.

I fundamentally believe that good nutrition (alongside sleep & exercise) is a core element in our quest for long-term, high performance and optimal wellbeing.

A better way of classifying foods?

The NOVA food classification system (see below) categorizes foods into four groups based on the extent and purpose of their processing.

This system aims to help consumers understand the impact of food processing on health, promoting a diet rich in natural and minimally processed foods while reducing the intake of ultra-processed products.

As a result of what I’ve learned from this book and further reading, I’ve made some simple changes to my diet. I’ve consciously put my health and wellbeing ahead of corporate profits.

What simple change could you make to move away from UPF?
