A Better Way To Evaluate Success
I used to think of success in very simple terms… salary and job title. That was it! I think that’s how many of us learn to measure success.
Over the years, I’ve come to have a more nuanced view of what ‘success’ looks like. Success still includes salary and job title. They remain important. But, for me, they’re not the most important measures.
Other measures that have greater importance for me now are:
liking what I do
having real impact with individuals and in the community
free time/flexibility
health
wellbeing
How can we go about reassessing success?
If we think of personal success, using business terminology, we can begin to create a plan of action:
1) Have a clear objective. What does success look like for you? This will determine how you allocate your personal resources – time and energy.
2) Link your objective to the processes and activities that you can control through the application of your skills. What are your KPIs?
3) Regularly review and re-evaluate.
Stop and think about what success means to you. We’re all unique so we’ll all have a different perspective on success. All that matters is what’s right for you.
